Jennifer Bashir and her husband, Ahmad Bashir, launched a free sandwich drive two years ago. They would prepare over 100 sandwiches, and as members were going home after Friday Prayers, the Bashirs would head down to St. Vincent’s church in downtown Baltimore, where over 150 people would typically be served.
As word traveled, men and women of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community joined them. These days, after most Friday Prayers, a team of our female members gather to make fresh sandwiches with a variety of breads, layered with mayonnaise, turkey or chicken meats, and cheese. Water, juice, and a fruit cup are included in the package. Boxes of sandwiches are then loaded into a car where Jennifer and Ahmad Bashir serve from 150-175 people.
The Bashirs don’t make a big deal out of this. That is understandable, based on this verse of the Holy Quran:
We feed you for Allah’s pleasure only. We desire no reward nor thanks from you” (76:10)
